Finding the Perfect Outdoor Photoshoot Location in Malta

One of the most important parts of planning an outdoor photoshoot is choosing the right location. The setting can completely transform the look and mood of the photos, so it’s not something I leave to chance. When I’m preparing for a shoot in Malta, one of the first things I often do is simply jump in the car or take a walk and explore.

Sometimes the best locations aren’t the ones everyone already knows - they’re the hidden corners you discover while driving around, walking through a village, or spotting a beautiful patch of countryside with perfect light. Malta may be small, but it’s full of diverse backdrops if you take the time to look for them.

Matching the Location to the Photoshoot

Every photoshoot has a different story to tell, and the location should support that story. When scouting locations, I always think about the type of shoot and the feeling we want to create.

For family portrait sessions, I usually look for cleaner, open environments. Places with greenery, countryside views, quiet parks, or charming village streets work beautifully. These locations keep the focus on the family while still adding natural texture and warmth to the images. A relaxed countryside setting or a scenic overlook can make the photos feel natural and timeless.

For engagement or couples sessions, the location can be a little more romantic and atmospheric. Beaches around sunset are always a favourite in Malta, with the soft golden light and open horizon creating a beautiful mood. The countryside also works wonderfully for couples who enjoy nature, while historic streets or urban corners can give a more cinematic feel.

Some couples also like something a little different or creative. In those cases we might look for places like farms, rustic fields, old stone walls, abandoned structures, vineyards, or dramatic coastal cliffs. These kinds of locations add character and help create images that feel unique.

Urban Shoots and Creative Projects

Not every photoshoot calls for nature. Some sessions work better in a more urban environment.

For example, music promo shoots, fashion sessions, or creative portrait photography often benefit from strong textures and architectural elements. Old Maltese streets, colourful doors, textured limestone walls, stairways, graffiti, and modern city areas can all add visual interest.

Urban locations also give us more control over shapes, shadows, and lines in the composition, which can make the images feel more bold and editorial.

Outdoor Portraits Offer Endless Creativity

Portrait sessions outdoors can be incredibly creative because the environment becomes part of the composition. Instead of a plain studio background, we can work with light, shadows, textures, leading lines, and natural framing.

A simple wall, a row of trees, tall grass moving in the wind, or sunlight filtering through branches can add depth and emotion to a portrait. Sometimes the best shot comes from noticing how the light hits a particular corner or how the background complements the subject.

Considering Comfort and Accessibility

Another important factor when choosing a location is how easy it is to reach.

Some clients are adventurous and love the idea of walking a bit or even taking a small hike to reach a hidden spot with an amazing view. Malta has some stunning cliffs and countryside paths that are perfect for this type of shoot.

However, not everyone wants to walk far - especially families with small children or clients who simply prefer convenience. In those cases, I look for locations that are easy to access, close to a car park, and comfortable to move around in. Urban areas, promenades, and open public spaces are often great options for this.

The goal is always to make the experience enjoyable and relaxed so the photos feel natural.

The Right Location Makes All the Difference

At the end of the day, the location is more than just a backdrop - it helps tell the story of the photoshoot. Whether it’s a quiet countryside path, a dramatic coastal view, or the charm of a Maltese street, the right setting can elevate the entire session.

Sometimes the perfect spot is a well-known location, and other times it’s somewhere unexpected discovered during a simple ride around the island.

Malta offers an incredible variety of landscapes within a small distance, which means there’s always somewhere new to create something special.
